Meta Tags & How to use Them

Here is an example of a meta tag, if your website doesn't have one at the top of every page on your website, then you have big problems as far as Search Engine Optimisation are concerned.

If this is the case, then you will never get anywhere in the search results pages, simply because the search engine wont know how to categorize your web pages.

<title>HERE YOU PUT TITLE FOR WEB BROWSER</title>
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1">
<META NAME="description" CONTENT="Here your put a short description about your page" >
<META NAME="keywords" CONTENT="Place to Put Keywords Only Off Your Page">

Above you can see a meta tag, you find them in the top HTML code of almost every website - web page, I say almost because I have definitely seen websites with them missing.

The meta tag is a powerful part of SEO it is what tells the search engines what your website and your web page is all about, they need to be unique to the actual web page, because the search engines document and file away the individual web pages not just the website as a whole.

If you don't do these in the correct way your website will not be searchable for what keywords and keyword phrases that they are intended for.

When search engine results pages show the results, this information in normally what is put up as the description for the website, as you will prop ably see with almost all search engines.

Search engine results pages clip

Above is a small clip from the search engine results pages at the top in blue will be the Title, below that is the meta description, below that is the keyword meta tag.

As you can probably guess the title and the description is what will make a visitor click on your websites as apposed to someone else's when they show up in the results, so you can see how important the words you choose to place here are.
